Top Drilling and its predecessors have drilled and serviced thousands of natural gas and oil wells in Appalachia over five generations. TDC is one of the pioneers of the well drilling and service industries in West Virginia. Over the last 120 years in the business, Top Drilling has continuously improved upon the drilling, completion and production of natural gas and oil.
Warren R. Haught (3rd generation), Top Drilling, & its predecessors have been one of the founding pioneers of the drilling industry in Central West Virginia. His companies have impacted the way wells are completed including drilling style, casing program, fracturing methods, etc. One of the biggest changes in the industry over the past several decades was the introduction of new drilling technology, specifically, the conventional rotary drilling rig in the early 1970’s. Top Drilling purchased its first conventional drilling rig in 1970 & this significantly increased the drilling operation allowing for a vast amount of new, deeper wells to be drilled. The company was, at that point, capable of drilling more wells in one year than its forefathers had accomplished in a lifetime. At its peak in the mid-1970’s, Top Drilling had 5 conventional drilling rigs & 6 spudder drilling rigs running continuously drilling the “Big Injun” formation. Completing wells at a rate of at least one well every 2 days, this was a very busy & productive time for Top Drilling & the oil & gas industry in whole. See “The History of Ritchie County” by Warren Haught for more information on this period.Read Less
